Carrie is a 1976 film directed by Brian De Palma. It was produced by Paul Monash and the screenplay was written by Lawrence D. Cohen. The film is based on Stephen King’s 1974 novel, Carrie. It stars Sissy Spacek, John Travolta and Piper Laurie in the lead roles.

Carrie was the first novel by Stephen King to be adapted into a feature film. At the time when the film was made Stephen King was 26 years old and he was paid just $2,500 for the film rights however he said “I was fortunate to have that happen to my first book”. It became one of many film or television adaptions of his books and since Carrie more than 100 have been made.

In the final scene which Sue reaches towards Carrie’s grave, was filmed backwards in order to give it a dreamlike feel. The scene was inspired by the final scene in Deliverance.

Sissy Spacek had insisted on using her own hand in the scene. In an interview Brian De Palma said about the Sissy wanting to do the scene herself “Sissy, come on, I’ll get a stunt person. What do you want? To be buried in the ground?!” with Sissy replying “Brian, I have to do this”. He went on to explain that they “had to bury her. Bury her! We had to put her in a box and stick her underneath the ground. Well, I had her husband bury her because I certainly didn’t want to bury her. I used to walk around and set up the shot and every once in a while we’d hear Sissy say ‘Are we ready yet?’, ‘Yeah, Sissy, we’re going to be ready real soon’”.

Carrie was nominated for two Academy Awards for Sissy Spacek as Best Actress and Piper Laurie as Best Actress in a supporting role. Piper was also nominated for the same title at the Golden Globes. The film launched or enhanced many of the young actors careers stars such as Nancy Allen, William Katt, Amy Irving and John Travolta. It relaunched Piper Laurie career who had not been active since 1961.
