Spider-Man: Homecoming is a 2017 film directed by Jon Watts. It was co-produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal. The screenplay was co-written by Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley, Jon Watts, Christopher Ford, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Spider-Man: Homecoming is based on the original Marvel Comics character Spider-Man by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. It stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Jon Favreau, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Tyne Daly, Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.

The storyline follows Peter Parker as he tries to balance his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and must confront a new menace, the Vulture who is prowling the skies of New York City.

Jon Watts wanted a different approach with Spider-Man: Homecoming and didn’t want to include or reference characters from previous Spider-Man films, outside of major ones like Peter and May Parker. This included The Daily Bugle, with co-producer Eric Hauserman Carroll saying, “We toyed with it for a while, but again, we didn’t want to go down that road right away, and if we do do a Daily Bugle, we want to do it in a way that feels contemporary”.

Principle photography for Spider-Man: Homecoming took place at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayette County, Georgia under the working title Summer of George. Additional filming took place in Atlanta, with locations including Grady High School, Downtown Atlanta, the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Piedmont Park, the Georgia World Congress Centre and the West End neighbourhood.

When Spider-Man: Homecoming was released it received positive reviews from the critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes it currently holds a rating of 92% with the general consensus being, “Spider-Man: Homecoming does whatever a second reboot can, delivering a colourful, fun adventure that fits snugly in the sprawling MCU without getting bogged down in franchise-building”.

Manohla Dargis from The New York Times said, “Mr Holland looks and sounds more like a teen than the actors who’ve previously suited up for this series, and he has fine support from a cast that includes Jacob Batalon as Peter’s best friend. Other good company includes Donald Glover, as a wrong time, wrong-place criminal, and Martin Starr, who plays his teacher role with perfect deadpan timing”.

Commercially, Spider-Man: Homecoming was a box office success. Having been produced with an estimated production budget of $175m. In its opening weekend, it took $117,027,503 at the US box office and took $705,174,453 in total worldwide box office receipts.

In June 2016, it was announced that both Sony and Marvel have committed to making a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and discussions started in October 2016. At the current time, it has a scheduled release date of 5th July 2019.
