Suicide Squad is a 2016 superhero film directed by David Ayer and produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle. The screenplay was written by David Ayer and is based on the fictional supervillain team Suicide Squad by John Ostrander which first appeared in American comic books published by DC Comics. Suicide Squad is the third installment in the DC Extended Universe series and features an all-star cast of Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Karen Fukuhara, Ike Barinholtz and Cara Delevingne.

The storyline is set one-year after Superman’s death and follows a secret government agency led by Amanda Waller who recruits a team of dangerous criminals imprisoned at Belle Reve Special Security Barracks called Task Force X. Their job is to execute dangerous black ops missions and save the world from a powerful threat in exchange for reduced sentences.

Principal photography began on 13th April 2015 in Toronto, Ontario, with additional filming in Chicago, Illinois. Certain scenes were reshot following Warner Bros’s desire to add a more lighthearted and comedic tone akin to the trailers, especially as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was criticised for being too somber; it was reported the reshoots cost as much as $22 million.

When Suicide Squad was released it received mostly negative reviews from critics with most of the criticism aimed towards the editing, directing and writing, although the cast was widely praised paerticularly Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn, with many critics eager to see more of the character in future films. On Rotten Tomatoes it currently holds a rating of 27% with the general consensus being, “Suicide Squad boasts a talented cast and a little more humor than previous DCEU efforts, but they aren’t enough to save the disappointing end result from a muddled plot, thinly written characters, and choppy directing.”.

Commercially, Suicide Squad was hugely successfull at the box office despite receiving mostly negative reviews from critics. Produced on an estimated production budget of $175 million it made $65.1 million, making it the biggest August opening and single day and the third biggest opening day gross of 2016. It earned $133.7 million in its opening weekend, setting a new record for the month of August which had previously been held by Guardians of the Galaxy and a record for Will Smith’s career beating I Am Legend. Suicide Squad grossing $325.1 million in the US box office reciepts and went on to make $421.7 million in other territories giving it $746.8 million in total worldwide box office receipts.
