The Day of the Jackal is a 1973 film directed by Fred Zinnemann and starring Edward Fox and Michel Lonsdale. It is based on the 1971 thriller novel The Day of the Jackal by English writer Frederick Forsyth, the film is about a professional assassin known only as the "Jackal”, who is contracted by the Organisation Armée Secrète (OAS), a French dissident paramilitary organisation, to kill Charles de Gaulle, the President of France in the summer of 1963. The novel received admiring reviews and praise when first published in 1971, and it received a 1972 Best Novel Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America.
