The Wolf of Wall Street is 2013 film directed by Martin Scorsese. It was co-produced by Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Riza Aziz, Joey McFarland and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. The screenplay was written by Terence Winter based on the memoir, The Wolf of Wall Street by former stockbroker and trader Jordan Belfort. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Joanna Lumley, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau and Jean Dujardin. The film is the fifth collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, after Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004) and The Departed (2006).
The storyline follows Jordan Belfort’s perspective on his career as a stockbroker in New York City and how his company Stratton Oakmont was engaged in rampant corruption and fraud on Wall Street and the corporate banking world, including shoe designer Steve Madden. As their status grows, so do the amount of substances they abuse, and so do their lies. They draw attention like no other, throwing lavish parties for their staff when they hit the jackpot on high trades. With the FBI on tracking his trading schemes it all ultimately leads to his and his business partner and friend Donnie Azoff downfall.
Principle photography took places New York with additional filming in Closter, New Jersey and Harrison, New York. Additional scenes were filmed at a set built in an abandoned office building in Ardsley, New York. With the beach house party scenes filmed in Sands Point, New York.
The Wolf of Wall Street uses animals including a chimpanzee, a lion, a snake, a fish and dogs. Danny Porush who was Jordan Belfort’s real-life partner denied there being any animals in the office. In an interview Jonah Hill revealed that he made $60,000 on the film (the lowest possible Screen Actors Guild rate for his amount of work), while his co-star Leonardo DiCaprio received $10 million. Hill didn’t care about his settlement though, and wanted to play Donnie Azoff so badly that he was willing to do whatever it took to get the part as it was his dream to be in a Martin Scorsese film.
When The Wolf of Wall Street was released it received positive reviews from the critics who praised DiCaprio and Hill’s performances, Scorsese’s direction, and Winter’s screenplay. On Rotten Tomatoes it holds a 78% rating with the consensus “Funny, self-referential, and irreverent to a fault, The Wolf of Wall Street finds Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio at their most infectiously dynamic”.
Commercially, The Wolf of Wall Street was a huge box office success. Produced on an estimated production budget of $100m, it took $18,361,578 in the US on its opening weekend. It went on to take $392,000,694 in total worldwide box office receipts.
The Wolf of Wall Street was nominated for five Academy Awards; Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. It was also nominated for four BAFTAs, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay and David Lean Award for Direction. It was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy which DiCaprio won.
