Fury is a 2014 film directed by David Ayer. He wrote the film and also co-produced the film with Bill Block, John Lesher, Alex Ott, Ethan Smith and Brad Pitt. The film stars Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Peña, Jon Bernthal, Jason Isaacs and Scott Eastwood.
The storyline is based on a US tank crew in Nazi Germany during the final days of World War II. The tough Sergeant Don ‘Wardaddy’ Collier commands a tank and survives a German attack with his veteran crew composed of Boyd ‘Bible’ Swan, Trini ‘Gordo’ Garcia and Grady ‘Coon-Ass’ Travis. He receives a rookie soldier Norman Ellison as the substitute for his deceased gunner and he tries to harden the youth along the way.
David Ayer was inspired by the military service of members of his own family and reading books about the second world war. One inspirational book called Death Traps by Belton Y. Cooper which is about US armoured warfare in WW2. However, Fury, is very similar to the 1966 Polish WW2 series Czterej Pancerni i Pies which translates to Four Tankers and a Dog. The overall aim of the film was to have a greater alignment to realism than has already been achieved in other films.
Film rehearsal began in Hertfordshire, UK with principal photography being carried out in Oxfordshire, England. Filming continued for just under two months and included various different locations the North West of the UK. Pinewood Studios sent letters to villagers in Shirburn, Pyrton and Watlington warning there would be explosions and sounds of gunfire during the filming.
The Tiger 131 used in the film is the only operating Tiger 1 tank in the world. It is owned by The Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset. It is the first time a genuine Tiger 1 tank has been used in a war film since 1950. During filming for Fury 10 M4 Sherman tanks were used, however, the main tank featured is called RON/HARRY (T224875) and is also owned by The Tank Museum.
Fury received critic acclaim and reviews. It was also a big success at the box office, against a budget of $68m it earned £211.8m in worldwide box office sales.
