Justice League is a 2017 film directed by Zack Snyder. It was produced by Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. The screenplay was written by Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon. Based on the Justice League by Gardner Fox about a group of fictional superheroes published by DC Comics and the fifth instalment in the DC Extended Universe. Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen and J. K. Simmons.

The storyline follows a team of superheroes who are inspired by Superman’s selfless act. Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

In May 2017, director Zack Snyder stood down from post-production following the death of his daughter. Joss Whedon, with whom Zack had worked on some additional scenes, took over post-production of Justice League. In July 2017, the film under went two months of reshoots in London and Los Angeles. The reshoots coincided with Henry Cavill’s filming schedule on Mission Impossible 6, for which he had grown a moustache. He was contractually obliged to keep it whilst filming, so the VFX team had to use special effects to digitally remove the moustache in post-production.

Principle photography took place at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, United Kingdom as well as various other locations around London, Scotland, Los Angeles and in Djúpavík in the Westfjords of Iceland.s

When Justice League was released it received generally mixed reviews from the critics, with praise towards the action sequences and performances (particularly Gadot and Miller) but criticised the thin plot, CGI and the underdeveloped villain. On Rotten Tomatoes it holds a 40% rating with the consensus “Justice League leaps over a number of DC movies, but its single bound isn’t enough to shed the murky aesthetic, thin characters, and chaotic action that continue to dog the franchise”.

Richard Roeper of Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 3.5 out of 4 stars, praising the cast, especially Gadot, and saying “It’s a putting-the-band-together origins movie, executed with great fun and energy.” Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter, while praising Gadot and Miller, called the film visually ugly and boring, saying, “Fatigue, repetition and a laborious approach to exposition are the keynotes of this affair, which is also notable for how Ben Affleck, donning the bat suit for the second time, looks like he’d rather be almost anywhere else but here.”

Commercially, Justice League was a box office success. Produced on an estimated production budget of $300m, it took $93,842,239 in the US on its opening weekend. It went on to take $614,729,6688 in total worldwide box office receipts.
